The Cheese Shop: Small Business of the Week
It's Friday, which means it's time for another Small Business of the Week! Today we want to highlight The Cheese Shop - Merchants Square! The Cheese Shop was established in 1971, with its first location in Newport News and its second location in Colonial Williamsburg's Merchants Square. Tom and Mary Ellen Power, Sr. were the first two owner-operators, bringing specialty cheese, wines, and delicious food the area. Today, The Cheese Shop and Fat Canary are operated by their three children, making it a third-generation family business with a staff of over 70. Next year, the company will celebrate 50 years of business!
For most of 2020, The Cheese Shop has been working on its largest expansion in 17 years. The new retail Wine Cellar reopened this summer, and Fat Canary's new downstairs dining room and bar is almost complete. The downstairs menu is less expensive and more casual than the upstairs, with exposed steel and concrete—original from 1927! The Powers say the space feels more like Williamsburg, Brooklyn than Williamsburg, Virginia, and you'll definitely want to check it out.
You can find The Cheese Shop on Facebook, Instagram, and their website.
